Your site's own language (under Settings → Language & time → Site language) is the main language. Multilingual adds others, each with its own addresses, such as /fr/....
Add the language
- Open Languages → Languages (administrators only).
- Under Add a language, pick one from Language, or type a code such as
frorpt-BR, and optionally a Name such as "Français". - Add it. Tick Visitors can see it and press Save when you're ready to publish it.
Translate your content
- Languages → Translations: open a page or post and fill in each text next to the original, including its address.
- Languages → Menu and site texts: your menu and site-wide texts.
- Commerce products and Bookings services are listed here too, if you use those extensions.
Choose how visitors reach each language (Languages → Settings)
- Language switcher: Under the footer or Floating in the corner, as a Dropdown or List of links, with or without flags. You can also place one anywhere with the Language switcher element in the page builder.
- Pages without a translation: show the original with a short notice, or leave them out of that language.
- Send first-time visitors of the home page to their browser language: only on the home page, once per visit. Search engines always see the main language.
- Give your main language a prefix too: off keeps its current addresses.
Visitor texts lets you reword what the switcher and the untranslated-page notice say.
Search engines are told about each version with hreflang tags, which Multilingual adds for you.
